Dennis Halfred Alder, 72, quietly and peacefully slipped away from this earth on Saturday, July 26, 2025, while under the care of his wife and hospice at the home of his son and daughter-in-law in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky.
Dennis leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Debra Stokes Alder. A daughter Kelly Alder-Janes (Sam), a son, Brian Alder (Link Henderson) and 2 Grandchildren, Parker and Avigayil Janes.
Born March 17, 1953, in Illinois, Dennis was the fourth of six siblings. At the age of eight, his family moved to California, where he later graduated from Van Nuys Senior High. On July 19, 1975, Dennis married the love of his life, Debra. Later in 1977, they bravely embarked on a cross-country move to West Virginia, marking the beginning of a new chapter filled with love and adventure.
Dennis had a gift for fixing or building anything. He was meticulous in his work, earning the trust and loyalty of customers who relied exclusively on his automotive expertise. Over the years, he was known to have diagnosed countless car problems over the phone often for his children and their friends and never hesitated to come to the rescue of a stranded family member, no matter the weather or hour.
Dennis was a devoted volunteer. In his children's younger years, he poured his evenings and weekends into supporting their interests. He helped build horse jumps for his daughter's 4-H club, the Silver Spurs, and participated in mountain biking and camping trips with his son's Boy Scout troop (#295). He was also an enthusiastic and skilled dancer, enjoying square and line dancing with his family (New River Gorge Square Dancers), and ballroom dancing (USA Dance) with his wife.
In later years, Dennis and Debra gave their time and hearts to animal rescue, fostering, and volunteering with ACWP. He was a playful and devoted grandfather who taught his grandchildren the joy of yelling into the mountains for echoes, feeding trees, and kayaking.
Over the past year, Dennis spent most of his time in Kentucky while undergoing treatment at Baptist Health Hospital in Lexington. He and Debra were deeply supported by the love and generosity of friends and family who stepped in to care for their home, animals, and daily needs gestures that provided comfort and hope during a difficult time. The family is forever grateful.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. We invite friends and family to come share stories and memories of Dennis with us.
